Kendra can be rather challenging as well and is sometimes motivated by cash and prizes to the point of concern but I was still so tickled that she won her division that I was almost giddy when I heard it.

For me, it is a reinforcement and reminder that I actually am right when it comes to Kendra, and no doubt all of our kids; that these are indeed typical kids who can go out and compete and do their own things and be their own little people.

Earlier this summer, there was a camp that all "gifted-identified" kids at school were invited to participate in. Well, it turns out that they weren't really intending to invite Kendra (Or at least they were clearly hoping we would not accept the offer.) We figured this out when they called within three hours of dropping off the form and payment to tell us they were not really in a position to adapt anything for her, etc.

Mind you, she did go and participate in that as well, but it turned into the usual fiasco initially as they figured out how to "deal with" a blind kid coming. Silly stuff, really. Still, it is things like the contest that sort of counter all of the daily battles to have our kids treaded normally. I think we've all earned our excessive happiness with this event!
