[blindkid] one good eye

Hi Carol,

My daughter has one good eye. Her acuity is great.

It's very important to get a pair of eyeglasses. This provides added protection in the event of, say,, running into a tree branch or whatever that the child might have missed because of the monocular vision..

A hat with a protective brim of some sort should be added whenever possible.

Depth perception is an issue, so get the school to paint stripes on the edges of the steps, etc.

It is my opinion that lack of depth perception affects a number of school related activities but you have to find that out on a case-by-case basis. I think a 504 is useful even if it's just pointing out that the child does have depth perception issues.

Reading assignments maybe should be broken up a bit if the child gets eyestrain. Mine does.

It has often occurred to me that my monocular child could benefit by use of a cane in situations where the ground is uneven or steps are unpainted, and similar situations. I would be interested in knowing if there's any literature on the subject.

All that said, my daughter plays sports runs around like a crazy person and functions very well in her worldl.

Best,
Lynda
