As a parent I was a bit surprised with this.  I have an 11 year old and I tried working with him at home.  I want him to be able to do what his younger brother does as well and I do want him to feel that he could do all the things other children can do but of course with practice.  I really never expected a teacher to teach him these things because they are there to help him at school and in the outside world.  As a parent we should be the ones helping them at home.  These are my thoughts.  I believe that the parents is aware what the child is able to do and will work with them to find what works for them at home.  I have learned that we need a lot of patience and some creativity.  I guess that once you start seeing how things can be a bit easier for them at home then less frustration from them in the long run.

A few things that we have done at home is braille things around the kitchen, take them around the house and let them know where things are and make sure that you don't make too many changes for them.  While I'm cooking I get him involved by mixing or adding the ingredients and he enjoys doing this.  I have also had him, help me, stir food on the stove.  Yes he was scared but I did let him know what he needs to be aware of.  By doing this I have made him comfortable being in the kitchen instead of being scared.  He is a good helper and I'm very proud of him.  We need to give them the benefit of the doubt.  Yes they are blind but they can still do other things and we can't stop them from that.  I keep telling my son that he could do whatever he wants and to never give up.  What better advice can you give them?

Hope this helps.

Susie

Yay Carol! I remember one time a parent got really mad at me for saying it did not take a "professional" to teach a kid how to fold towels and I felt like the mom/parent could easily show their own child.  As a teacher, I can NOT do it all and we all need to work together. Parents, if you don't know how to show your child how to do something, please just ask! And to be honest, as a TVI - I have not "taken a class" on a lot of what the ECC expects. Self advocacy is so important and yes, we all need to help kids speak up, realize what they need, and how to get it. Unfortunately, there are many "in the field" that have a different opinion.

Amen Carol! That's exactly what I was thinking, but thought it would be more appropriate for a parent to say it-and I'm glad one did.
