I am a 43 year old blind adult and I have been doing ballet now for a year,
but have received formal training in the way of classes and private lessons
for the past five months. Alisha Alonzo is the name of one ballet dancer I
am aware of who is from Cuba and also blind. I read her biography and it's
quite interesting. I am more than willing to share my experience with any
family or person who might be thinking about trying ballet. Ballet has the
reputation of being "hard to crack into" for those who are not of a certain
physical level, background or economic level, but from what I've noticed,
there is a growing trend to embrace diversity within it, both from
professional and recreational perspectives. I would highly encourage anyone
who is interested to give it a try. I can also definitely tout for the
benefits of it for blind children. It is an excellent way to learn about
space/body relationships, moving your body through space, directional
concepts, etc.
