[BlindKid] LCB question

Linda,

I heartily recommend programs at the Louisiana Center for the Blind (LCB).
My daughter attended an eight-week program (STEP) last summer, and she
learned and grew so much. My daughter will graduate from high school this
fall, and she plans to take a "gap year" to receive adult training at LCB,
beginning this fall.

Why is the training at LCB so valuable?
First, most of the staff are blind. They are blind, but they are not great
teachers because they are blind. They are great teachers because they have
undergone training in teaching and in blindness skills. As a sighted
teacher of blind students, I "know" many blindness skills, but I do not use
them throughout my day on a regular basis.
Secondly, while I'm sure that you and your husband have taught your
daughter a great deal, people who are not "Mom" or "Dad" can make
connections that we moms and dads really cannot.
Third, we humans learn better when we learn with and from our peers.
Students at LCB have a peer learning group that most blind students in our
country do not.
Lastly, LCB is a caring and supportive environment. Students are pushed to
step out of their comfort zones, but the instructors make certain that the
students have the skills to do the task and always want every student to
succeed.

Also, I know that my daughter would be happy to speak with your daughter
(and with you and your husband) about her experience at LCB. Please do not
hesitate to reach out to me. Thank you,
Carlton
