[BlindKid] College Preparation was RE: Math Homework on the PC

I, as well, can't stress enough how important that is. That is a good part of what I am after, too. I am very aware that in k12 things need to be prepared for the girls, but I also know, especially with my oldest right now, that she needs to know what to do if things aren't taken care of for her. I work in the ADA compliance office at a community college, and one of the biggest frustrations I have is watching the blind students come in totally ill prepared for anything that might come their way. A good portion of them have had everything handed to them in some form or another, but they have absolutely no idea how to access things on their own. You would be surprised how many I have seen who, if they have ever laid hands on a keyboard, it was only to decide it wasn't for them. They might have knowledge of how to operate their iPhone and a braille display. The braille displays have played an essential part in my girls lives, but I have made sure they can work the keyboard properly, so they can still function on the day when the display goes on the fritz, and it isn't available while it is being repaired or whatever. I have had students tell me blackboard isn't accessible, and it isn't because they went on to get an assignment that wasn't accessible, but that they just have no clue how to even log in to blackboard, or how to attach an assignment to an email. As much as I would love to stop and train every one of them, It is really only my job to make sure they have the materials they need in the form that is most accessible to them, and to make sure they are able to access the online information. If they can't because they don't know how, I am helpless. It kills me to watch some of these incredibly intelligent kids walk in, only to have them leave discouraged, because they couldn't keep up when everything was really ready for them, but they just weren't ready. While I know the district is responsible for providing everything in a timely manner, and that is truly what I am fighting for, I also feel like that one or two assignments that get uploaded to Canvas an hour before class, even though in a perfect world, it should be accessible, my girls should at least know how to use the tools that are available to them to get that assignment done.

I hate to be the one to throw a wet blanket on college disability services but the quality varies widely. That is why it is absolutely critical that your students learn self-advocacy skills while they are in school. Once students enter college and vocational rehabilitation you cannot talk to the service providers. Your children will need self-advocacy skills for the rest of their lives.

Traci,
Your kids will have access to disabled students services at most any college that they will attend. And some help assistive technology special on staff will access what they need. Or their Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor who can also have an accesstive technology assessment done to see what will help them in college. The counselor would be able to share that with the disabled student office at the college.
