CAREER OPPORTUNITY
ADVOCACY AND POLICY STRATEGIST [IRI-11]
American Civil Liberties Union Foundation
Affiliate Support and Advocacy Department, NY, NY

For more than 93 years, the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation (ACLUF) has been at the forefront of virtually every major battle for civil liberties and equal justice in this country. Principled and nonpartisan, the ACLU has offices in all 50 states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico, and brings together the country's largest team of public interest lawyers, lobbyists, communication strategists, members and activists in the advancement of equality, fairness, and freedom, especially for the most vulnerable in our society.

The Affiliate Support and Advocacy Department of the ACLU's National Office seeks a full-time Advocacy and Policy Strategist. This position will be based in New York City.

OVERVIEW

Since its inception, the ACLU has maintained a commitment to protecting and promoting the civil rights and civil liberties of immigrants and their families. The ACLU is at the forefront of the immigrants' rights movement during this critical time. It has also been at the forefront of almost every major recent struggle on behalf of immigrants' rights, engaging in a diverse range of strategies including advocacy, organizing, litigation, and public education.

Through an integrated team including advocacy staff, litigators, communications specialists, federal lobbyists and ACLU's state affiliates, the ACLU employs advocacy strategies that are playing a key role in defeating anti-immigrant laws like Arizona's SB 1070 and in winning pro-immigrant, pro-civil liberties laws and policies on the federal, state and local levels throughout the United States.
The ACLU brings to this work its policy and advocacy expertise, one million members, activists, social media followers; and a nationwide network of ACLU affiliate offices that lobby in every state legislature and lead ballot campaigns on a wide range of civil liberties issues.

Reporting to a Senior Advocacy and Policy Strategist, the Advocacy and Policy Strategist will be part of the ACLU's Advocacy Team, which works with ACLU affiliates across the country to further the ACLU's public policy priorities at the federal, state and local levels to protect and advance civil liberties. The Advocacy and Policy Strategist will focus on working with ACLU affiliates, state partners, and national allies to aggressively battle state and local attempts to pass anti-immigrant legislation and policies, as well as to push for positive measures that protect immigrants from discrimination and assist their efforts to integrate into civic life. The Strategist will work with affiliates to design multi-faceted advocacy campaigns, focusing on strategic alliance formation and coalition building, grasstops engagement and deployment, and mobilization of the ACLU activist network and allies to protect and advance immigrants' rights. The ideal candidate will bring a creative and strategic advocacy perspective to an interdisciplinary team.

 * Assist in the administration of grants awarded by the National Office to affiliates.
 * Participate in national coalitions and develop relationships with allies and other organizations to further advocacy goals.
