CAREER OPPORTUNITY
PARALEGAL [VRP-06]
American Civil Liberties Union Foundation
Voting Rights Project, NY

For nearly 100 years, the ACLU has been our nation’s guardian of liberty, working in courts, legislatures, and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States. Whether it’s ending mass incarceration, achieving full equality for the LGBT community, establishing new privacy protections for our digital age, or preserving the right to vote or the right to have an abortion, the ACLU takes up the toughest civil liberties cases and issues to defend all people from government abuse and overreach. With more than a million members, activists, and supporters, the ACLU is a nationwide organization that fights tirelessly in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C., for the principle that every individual’s rights must be protected equally under the law, regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability or national origin.

The ACLU’s Voting Rights Project seeks applicants for a full-time Paralegal position. The position will be in the ACLU’s New York City office.

OVERVIEW

The ACLU has a long history of defending the right to vote, which it believes is the backbone of democracy. The ACLU played a critical role in convincing the U.S. Supreme Court to establish the “one person, one vote” rule and in strengthening the Voting Rights Act in 1982. Through persistent litigation, voter empowerment, and fighting efforts to restrict the vote in state legislatures, the ACLU helped make it possible for minority voters all over America to participate in the electoral process, and through that, to change the face of government.

Today, the ACLU’s voting rights work includes litigation and working for strong federal and state legislation and policy. The work is carried out through the Legal and Advocacy Departments of the national ACLU, its Washington Legislative Office, and by the ACLU’s 53 affiliate offices around the country. The voting rights work is part of the ACLU’s Center for Equality which works to uphold the federal constitution’s promise that all Americans will receive equal protection of the law. The Equality Center also includes the ACLU’s work on racial justice, immigrants’ rights and disability.

The ACLU is the only civil rights organization committed to defending the freedom of all Americans to vote, with legislative and litigation capacity in all 50 states. Three principles guide our work: (1) all Americans should be able to vote; (2) voting should be free and easy; and (3) all people should count equally in the political process. In recent years, many states have actively undertaken new efforts to suppress voting, by erecting barriers to registration and the ballot with more frequency than we have seen in decades. Our focus is currently on combating this nationwide wave of voter suppression legislation.
