[blindLaw] iOS 13? Don’t do it!

Our IT staff recently sent out another memo as to why they don’t recommend updating to iOS 13 at this time. One reason is that if an email is attached to another email, the attached email can’t be read (or at least sometimes can’t be read) in iOS 13. I have regrettably had this experience on my personal phone. And this recommendation is firm-wide, having nothing to do with accessibility. I often get emails with attached emails, and it boggles the mind that these are unreadable in iOS 13.

Every blind attorney should have two computer systems and two mobile devices. One is set to not auto update and remains the stable primary work station. The second test backup system is updated to the version just behind the latest version, i.e. iOS 12.X. This ensures you can test stuff before breaking your main work environment. I don't ever recommend running the latest version of an OS regardless of what the marketing people at Microsoft and Apple say. MY opinion is that Windows 7 and iOS 12 or earlier still provide better accessibility than more recent versions. As attorneys, we rarely need the extra features that come in the latest version. I'm still regretting some instability in Windows 10.

hi list mates,
Just a word to the wise. Apple has updated his iOS for iPad and iPhone introducing features that counsel out many important accessibility features. If you have low vision or use Braille, these bugs in the new operating system can significantly impede your work. I installed iOS 13.1.3 yesterday morning, and I am sadder and wiser for having done so. If you go to AppleVis.com, you will get a detailed description of the problems that now exist. Those articles refer to iOS 13.1.2, but the problems have not been resolved by iOS 13.1.3.
If you have already installed any version of iOS 13 and are having problems, please contact Apple accessibility customer service at 877-204-3930 and report them. Or go to appleVis.com, sign in, and make a comment. That is the only way that Apple software engineers will know the extent to which our community is negatively impacted by the new update, According to Apple’s accessibility technicians.
Good luck,
Elizabeth
