[Blindmath] 3d graphing results

Just know that if he has to bail out of the graphing part, then he should
still get full credit if his answers to the equasions are correct. If he can
then explain how the answer would relate to a 3d graph, then he understands
the subject. After simplifying the answer, he has at least 1 dataset for the
graph (x,y,z), is able to plug it back into the problem, find the slope of
the line if there is any, then graphing is fairly easy. Unless he is going
into some major scientific field (graduate level in math, chemistry, nuclear
physics, or geometry), there is probably no need to understand graphing a 3d
object as long as he can solve the problems and understand why the answer is
what it is, he will be fine.
Then again, I could never accept the typical 'follow the steps to solve the
problem and you will be fine' line. I always have to understand the problem,
know why the problem exists, and truly understand the answer once I find
one. If that isn't possible, then I got the entire problem wrong because
solving it was by memorizing a bunch of steps. Doing this has helped me
explain some algebra to my wife. This is why I like the 'abstract' critical
way of solving math problems. It transfers to other parts of life and
school.

I am not saying that graphing is not important to blind people. It is
important in life and the workplace, especially business and analytical
types of jobs. However, graphing for anyone is easier if the problem itself
is understood, and can be solved without a graph first.

The unit continues the first week of December so I will let you know how it
turns out then.  We have one week off and after looking at his first quiz
grade and seeing the material they were moving into, I decided to get ahead
of it.  The standards that will be assessed are plotting points in a 3d
graph and then finding the midpoint and distance of a line with 3d graphs.

I have gathered a lot of ideas from these posts - so thanks!  I do think his
teachers will let him work the equations and then do the graphing.  They did
use an Apple Ap called Quick Graph in class Thursday and Friday and his para
is going to suggest allowing him to do the graphing of points in it.  They
tried to print the copy of the graph paper we found at school and the
quality of the printers and copiers makes the resolution unusable.  However,
I can print at home and go to copy store and get better resolution copies
and use the color sharpie idea to try and get him some real paper which is
easier for them to grade.

The only real visual area that is going to have to be worked out is locating
the points on the 3d graphs to use in the beginning of the equations for
finding the midpoint and distance.  If you don't visually interpret those
correctly, then the whole problem will be wrong.  He can talk to his teacher
and see how big of a deal that particular skill is for this content.  It
probably will be necessary for him to visually locate the points to begin
with and in that case I will just have to make sure they give him the most
accommodated graph possible.  I saved a few of his 2d quizzes from the same
skill where they gave him poor resolution quizzes and he visually did not
locate the right point to start with - but used the right equation and
simplified his answer correctly - so they should see the importance of the
resolution of the graph.

I was most disturbed by APH's assumption that there are not great tools for
these Math skills because they are not appropriate for blind/low vision
students.  Even those that are not Math majors, are still required to do it
and with the right tools will be fine.  I will also explore Excel 2013 and
building the quadrants with index cards if necessary.  Also, he does have
the Scientific Orion 36 and the Accessible TI 84 - so whenever they can be
used - it can help.  If I remember correctly though, one of these equations
(midpoint or distance) calls for simplifying radicals at the end and he will
probably use the TI 30SX Multiview either looking up close of under a CCTV
to simplify the radicals as neither a 36 or 84 will simplify radicals.

I find that my student also has the most success with the 3D graph board
from APH. It is rubberized, so we have purchased several different shapes
and sizes of push pins to allow her to distinguish between different
lines. We have placed a pin in the middle of the board and then used rubber
bands to create the x and y axis. I hope this is helpful!

For 3-D graphing you need an x, y, and z axis so I don't think you will find
what we would call accessible because the z axis is technically rising up in
the air from the origin.  He will be creating graphs that look like they are
floating in the quadrant based on their coordinates. The best you may be
able to do is to put different colors on each axis x,y, and z with colored
sharpies to help him as he follows the coordinates given in the problem. If
he has trouble understanding the concepts you can re-create the quadrants by
using index cards so he can conceptualize the change in the quadrant system.
I did this years ago by putting slits halfway through index cards and then
we put them together so we could see the 8 pockets of space that now existed
because of the addition of the z axis.  Hope this helps.

I'm not sure that the problem is being well described.  Perhaps we are
talking about isometric or perspective projections of solids.  I didn't look
at the web site you cited.  I tend to think of solid surfaces, such as
hyperbolic paraboloids, or conic sections.  Remember that the first person
to prove that you could evert a sphere (turn it inside out without breaking
anything) was a totally blind French mathematician.

One cheap but reusable thing I had when taking graphing was a peg board.  I
bought the peg board from Home depot and pegs to fit the holes.  That with
a bag of rubber bands and I was able to graph anything.  I had all kind of
wood tools so I was able to cut the peg board down to the size I wanted but
if you ask the folks at the local hardware store they will cut it to size
and help you get pegs to fit.  You could probably make something like this
for under 20 bucks.  Not super portable but very indestructible.

My son will be starting a 3d graphing unit that is fairly short (2 weeks)
in
about a week.  He spent some time searching online with his Math tutor for
3d Graphing paper and this is the graph paper that they found that worked
the best for his vision from what they were able to find in free 3d graph
paper options.  Does anyone know of a more accessible free (or low cost)
option?

I haven't got access to the net with sufficient time to find the exact link
for you but look for the Summery University held in conjunction with the
ICCHP. Sessions were recorded from 2010 onwards. I'm not sure if the 2013
ones are uploaded yet but the files mentioned should all be there for
reference purposes.

Dear all,

I'd like to bring to everyone's attention a project to advance browser and
e-reader support for MathML.  The project description itself is very
detailed, and explicitly mentions the issue of accessibility in the
motivation section.

The person behind this project is Fr?d?ric Wang.  He is one of the people
who has worked hard on MathML support in browser technology over the last
few years, so is best placed to know what the issues are and what the next
stage in development should be.  So if anyone is going to improved matters,
he's the best choice.

He's looking for funding so that he can spend some time concentrating on
MathML development and the website is on a crowd-funding site where people
can contribute.  The actual amount that he is trying to raise is not
actually all that much, particularly given the wide-ranging benefits that
could follow from this.

I hope that all of you will consider supporting this project, and that some
of you will actually do so.

I'm not sure that the problem is being well described.  Perhaps we are
talking about isometric or perspective projections of solids.  I didn't
look at the web site you cited.  I tend to think of solid surfaces, such as
hyperbolic paraboloids, or conic sections.  Remember that the first person
to prove that you could evert a sphere (turn it inside out without breaking
anything) was a totally blind French mathematician.

For 3-D graphing you need an x, y, and z axis so I don't think you will
find what we would call accessible because the z axis is technically rising
up in the air from the origin.  He will be creating graphs that look like
they are floating in the quadrant based on their coordinates. The best you
may be able to do is to put different colors on each axis x,y, and z with
colored sharpies to help him as he follows the coordinates given in the
problem. If he has trouble understanding the concepts you can re-create the
quadrants by using index cards so he can conceptualize the change in the
quadrant system.
I did this years ago by putting slits halfway through index cards and then
we put them together so we could see the 8 pockets of space that now
existed because of the addition of the z axis.  Hope this helps.

FYI - I sent this same question to APH and this is the response I got.  

"We do not have any 3-D graph paper as shown in your example at APH, nor am
I aware that it is available anywhere else. Technically speaking, 3-D
graphing may be OK for low vision students but not appropriate for braille
readers because depth information is not possible to be represented in
tactile graphics."

I am going to just hope for the best and be glad it's a short unit!

I think you mean that the information can't adequately be represented into
dimensional form. It can be represented tactilely as long as it's in three

I think if you're going to graphic having the Z axis in the air would be the
best option. I've been blind from birth, and while I understand that sighted
people delude themselves into thinking a one dimensional picture is a
three-dimensional object, I do not understand most of the time how they come
to their conclusions about this. They continually treat their pictures as if
they're actually objects, which annoys me to no end. Through school, I was
just given tactile pictures and taught the way cited people learn. As a
result, I thought there was something wrong with my brain and that I could
never succeed in math because I couldn't understand their pictures, methods
for representing things, and examples. I have come to learn that my brain
processes information differently then cited people, but I am still debating
with myself as to whether this means it isn't working or not. The point is
that now, I can do well in math without their difficult and unnatural ways
of doing things holding me back. When sighted people look at
three-dimensional representations, there really looking at optical
illusions. My brain doesn't process these illusions. I think it means I'll
be better equipped to do math beyond the third dimension, but it also means
I can't tolerate an accurate representation of the third dimension and
beyond. The z-axis may appear to be floating above the quadrant, but it
actually isn't because The quadrant is now three-dimensional. That's why I
think it's even bad for sighted people to represent three dimensions as
pictures.

If by 3d graph paper you mean isometric graph paper the previous poster is
exactly right.  Representing 3d objects in two dimensions or a plane relies
on creating an optical illusion that makes sense to many sighted people.  I
suppose a blind person could memorize the rules for doing this but I don't
see the point.

If you actually want to graph a function of 2 variables in physical space
you would need to build some sort of complex contraption.

There are toys which allow you to create a cube by connecting 12 sticks
together.  If the connectors are soft enough you can flatten the cube so a
blind person could feel what a 2d projection of a cube is like but I think
it would be hard to recognize it as a cube.  

I'll be interested in feedback from TVIs.  I can't think why this is
important.

If he can't represent 3d objects on a graph, will his instructor at least
give him full credit if he can solve the equasions? Another alternative is
to look at Excel 2013. It supports up to 300 different graph types
(including 3d graphs). JAWS supports up to 250 of them the last I checked.

for you but look for the Summery University held in conjunction with the
ICCHP. Sessions were recorded from 2010 onwards. I'm not sure if the 2013

Dear all,

I'd like to bring to everyone's attention a project to advance browser and
e-reader support for MathML.  The project description itself is very
detailed, and explicitly mentions the issue of accessibility in the
motivation section.

The person behind this project is Fr?d?ric Wang.  He is one of the people
who has worked hard on MathML support in browser technology over the last
few years, so is best placed to know what the issues are and what the next
stage in development should be.  So if anyone is going to improved matters,
he's the best choice.

He's looking for funding so that he can spend some time concentrating on
MathML development and the website is on a crowd-funding site where people
can contribute.  The actual amount that he is trying to raise is not
actually all that much, particularly given the wide-ranging benefits that
could follow from this.

I hope that all of you will consider supporting this project, and that some
of you will actually do so.

I am not familiar with three d graph paper, unless you are referring to the
paper from APH? I find my student fare best with the graph board from aph

Pretty well, actually. I'm not quite finished with calculus III, but the 
shapes were very useful for understanding concepts like traces. They were 
very well done - you could actually feel the traces. Maybe the student could

get some of these made?

I wish I could see something like this that was made with a 3d printer. Any

Pretty well, actually. I'm not quite finished with calculus III, but the
shapes were very useful for understanding concepts like traces. They were
very well done - you could actually feel the traces. Maybe the student could
get some of these made?

People don't realize that drawing in perspective is an invention. Before 
some time around 1300, when creating  paintings, artists didn't 
regularly even do things like make objects smaller to make them look 
like they were further away. These days, sighted people take this 
concept of perspective for granted but for most of human history, it 
didn't even exist.

I work on the 5th floor in  the math building on the campus of the 
University of Wisconsin. On the wall by the elevator, there is a raised 
number 5. Under that is the number 5 in braille. That raised number 
would mean nothing to someone who has never seen the number 5 in print. 
I am presuming it's there for people who lost their sight.  But the 
braille 5 and the printed 5 are equally valid representations of the 
concept of 5. Certainly the printed symbol 5 would be recognized by more 
people even so, they are equally valid representations of the concept of 
the number 5.

A graph is just like that. A graph is not the actual data, it's a 
symbolic representation of the data. Any decent instructor would know 
that.  Yet, all too often on this list, we hear of instructors saying 
that math is too visual by nature for a blind student to grasp.  It's 
ridiculous.

There is absolutely nothing in mathematics that is innately visual.  In 
fact, the less you rely on the symbolic representations of the concepts, 
the better off you are. It's impossible to communicate mathematical 
concepts without symbols -- words, print, or braill -- these are all 
symbols. But when you are working on the concepts in your own mind, the 
symbols can only get in the way. If adequate tools existed for 3D 
graphics,  a blind student might very well be better at it than a 
sighted student who might be locked into this inadequate perspective 
drawing concept.

 For geometry and algebra, you don't need a 3-D printer. You can either
order some of the shapes, have someone make them out of cardboard, or your
school my arty have them.

Whether we like it or not, most professors attempt to force students into
the graphing formulas and equasions because to them, it is required to exist
in the "real world". We have no idea when we will run into a problem that
will require the use of a 3d graph, 2d graph, or calculus 4. My wife is
required to take introduction to algebra to graduate with an associates in
general ed classes. Half of the material is geometry with 3d shapes and
graphing systems of equasions.
In the end, after talking to several professors, it comes down to their
inability to teach these concepts to people without the use of graphs. One
of my professors in college level algebra told me that they thought it was
impossible to solve an equasion that required a graph to find the answer.
After explaining that it is no different than solving an equasion (after
all, that's all it is), they started teaching students how to solve the
problem first, then graph the result. I thought this method is normally the
standard, but it isn't now?

People don't realize that drawing in perspective is an invention. Before
some time around 1300, when creating  paintings, artists didn't regularly
even do things like make objects smaller to make them look like they were
further away. These days, sighted people take this concept of perspective
for granted but for most of human history, it didn't even exist.

I work on the 5th floor in  the math building on the campus of the
University of Wisconsin. On the wall by the elevator, there is a raised
number 5. Under that is the number 5 in braille. That raised number would
mean nothing to someone who has never seen the number 5 in print. 
I am presuming it's there for people who lost their sight.  But the braille
5 and the printed 5 are equally valid representations of the concept of 5.
Certainly the printed symbol 5 would be recognized by more people even so,
they are equally valid representations of the concept of the number 5.

A graph is just like that. A graph is not the actual data, it's a symbolic
representation of the data. Any decent instructor would know that.  Yet, all
too often on this list, we hear of instructors saying that math is too
visual by nature for a blind student to grasp.  It's ridiculous.

There is absolutely nothing in mathematics that is innately visual.  In
fact, the less you rely on the symbolic representations of the concepts, the
better off you are. It's impossible to communicate mathematical concepts
without symbols -- words, print, or braill -- these are all symbols. But
when you are working on the concepts in your own mind, the symbols can only
get in the way. If adequate tools existed for 3D graphics,  a blind student
might very well be better at it than a sighted student who might be locked
into this inadequate perspective drawing concept.
