[BlindMath] Follow up to Zach and Vincent

Zach,

I would be sure to check Bookshare also if you have not - if they have it,
your membership should be free once you register as a college student. If
they don't, I might consider asking the DRC to ask the teacher to use a book
that is accessible - with over 500 titles at Learning Ally - maybe one of
them would work? I know this does not work always, some professors just
don't get it. My son is having trouble with a History teacher he loves but
uses really old maps without any known source that are not high quality
enough to enlarge. He is easy to work with though - my son meets with him
and they find a map that will work.

In answer to Vincent's question, Tommy LOVES UGA. They are amazing just
like Ga Tech where you are! I'm not saying there are never any
accessibility issues, but the DRC is always there to help him out. UGA's
DRC has a Speaker's Bureau on campus that he belongs to where he speaks out
about accessibility issues on campus.

With respect to Math and Science, he passed the required 1st Math class, but
needed to take a remedial Math class first. They use Pearson software that
is not very accessible. However, he was able to get some private tutoring
through the Math Tutoring Lab that all students utilize that helped a lot.
I tried a private tutor but found it better to use the school. The Math
Fundamentals class UGA requires is very odd and is nicknamed "calculator
class" by the tutoring center. The totally strange thing is that all Math
entry testing is done without a calculator - but then everything in the Core
Math class requires a calculator. Thankfully he passed with a C and was
grateful for the C. He worked really hard though. He was able to use a
reader for testing and the DRC gave him an accessible 84.

The Stat class he tried was not so successful. He was taking Japanese 2,
Stat, Biology, Biology Lab and Linguistics all at once and it was too
visual. He dropped Stat after the 2nd test which was on drop day.
Apparently his reader did not show up and he did not have the experience or
maturity to ask them to reschedule the test with a reader. He loved the
teacher though and will retake either it or another Math class next spring.
Entry Biology for Biology Majors is an applied Science class - not sure why.
He worked hard in there and got a C Plus in the class and an A in the Lab.
He did have a lab assistant. He will be asking for a lot more nonvisual
accommodations in the Spring. The DRC did have some media issues there,
they did not get him his Large Print until the week after he dropped it. He
made sure that the Media department was his first stop for Spring classes to
make sure his media was ready.

He is in International Affairs major who wants to be a lawyer. He had a
great summer last summer where he was accepted into FSU's College of Law
Summer for Undergraduates Program and will be doing the UGA at Oxford
Junemester Program this summer. He was just accepted into a three month
mentorship program with Pearson for students with disabilities who want to
be lawyers that just started. He is breezing through Marine Environment
this semester as his 2nd Science class which is not an applied Science.

Thank for all the help you have given him over the years! He may need some
Stat Pointers next year! He is very happy at UGA!

Mary

Zach,

Have you checked Learning Ally's Book Catalog? I know they have many math
titles and they have a graduate level Math teacher from UGA that volunteers
as a reader. I have met him at the Learning Ally volunteer events. My son
is visually impaired and a student at UGA and Learning Ally has a Athens
location. Learning Ally had both his undergraduate Math books already
recorded. Before you went to so much trouble I wanted to double check that
you had checked their catalog with the type of book you are looking for.
When I did a quick Statistics search on their database it showed 573 titles.
Here is the link to the search
https://www.learningally.org/Search/q/Statistics/?page=1&perpage=10&sortopti
on=Best%20Match&tab=abooks I don't know if any are at the graduate level
you want, but it's worth looking at before you get something converted if
you have not already. IF you have, sorry to distract you. Learning Ally is
on my mind as my son and I are speaking at the Volunteer event on Tuesday
night in Athens and I just thought I would check what they have. If you
don't get any takers on the conversion you might want to call them and see
if they would be willing to record something for you.

Hello List,

Is there someone with Imfty software who would consider processing a
graduate level statistics text book? My intent is to ask the PDF be returned
in LaTeX. I will then hire visual assistants to go through the book and
correct translation errors.

If someone on this list is willing, to volunteer or perform this service for
a fee, please contact me off-list.

Thanks,

Actually, you're going to have to do your online request form, I have not
had any luck calling and getting books request then you're going to have to
do it online

Hello,

I've checked Learning Ally, the Louis data base, and google books. None of
which have the book. I'll try the request, but I'm apprehensive it will not
be granted as it's a very old book, (published in 2004), and I don't imagine
there's a lot of demand for it.

Thanks,

Zac
