[Blindmath] Capital letters in MathType equations?

Only the English capitals are set to raise their pitch in the default settings (by 130%), so if you are looking for a pitch-change in Greek or other alphabets, that won't happen under the current speech rules, and you will need to set the Caps_saycaps.eqp preference from within MathType to get the "cap" speech.

That is, the usual way to set a preference is to open MathType to create or edit an expression in order to have access to the preference settings. Instructions for setting preferences are in the Authoring tutorial located at the following link: http://www.dessci.com/en/reference/ies-ets/instructional_material/default.htm#authoring_guides, which contains links to a Word document (http://www.dessci.com/en/reference/ies-ets/instructional_material/ClearSpeakAuthoringTutorial.docx) and video instructions.

The short version of what you need to do is as follows (assuming you have the preference files installed):

1. Open MathType on a new equation or on one for which you wish to change the speech
2. From the MathType menu, select Preferences, Equation Preferences, Load from File
3. Navigate to the location where your speech preferences are stored, and select Caps_saycaps.eqp. In the dialog box you will probably want to check "use for new equations." It is also often advisable, before setting a preference to first select the "clear_preferences" preference to make sure that no other preference file is potentially overriding your choice. If you set a preference without first clearing preferences, and the preference you set doesn't take, try going back and clearing preferences first, then set the desired preference.

If you do not find the Caps_saycaps.eqp among the speech preferences, you may need to download and extract the files located here: http://www.dessci.com/en/reference/ies-ets/instructional_material/AllEQPFiles.zip. Extract them to any location you like, and then when you select "Load from file" you will go to the location where you have saved the files.

If you have a document in which you wish to change ALL equations to say "cap" for capitals, I believe you can also make the change globally by going to the Word MathType ribbon, selecting "Format Equations," selecting the "MathType preference file" radio button, browse to the caps_saycaps.eqp preference, and then select "whole document" to apply to all equations in the document or "current selection" otherwise.

Please see also Neil's BlindMath posts from January 9 on the topic.

Neil, did I miss anything?

I appreciate all the responses on the reading of capital letters. I need some more clarification though since I am not able to get it working. Also, the responses seem to suggest that the default mode should be to read capital letters with a pitch difference. But by default, I am not getting any pitch difference in equations, even though the same speech synthesizer is giving a very clear pitch difference in regular text.
Is there something I could be missing? Alternatively, is there a document with clear step by step instructions on where I can find the relevant math type settings? When I go to the Math type tab in word, I can't find any settings on capital letters.
