I have not worked with this, but have heard about it on the program-l listserv of blind programmers. Google for PlantUML and follow some of the links. The Wikipedia article about plantuml would lead you to believe that a lot can be done with this notation system. Check it out.
NFBNet has an NFB in Computer Science (NFBCS) listserv which includes a number of blind programmers. Also, a blind programmers' list that is more international in scope is program-l at freelists.org.

Subject: [BlindMath] Creating Jaws and NVDA Accessible UML and ER Diagrams

hi, I am a blind computer science major. I am a screenreader user, primarily using Jaws and NVDA interchangeably.

I am taking two classes this quarter, design patterns and relational databases, that I need to be able to create diagrams for. In my Design patterns class, I am learning UML, which is a pictorial language used for object oriented software design. My relational databases class will be covering ER diagrams, which are used for modeling relational databases. From my understanding, the diagram sin tax for UML and ER diagrams is similar.

I am looking for a solution to be able to create and read these diagrams. I am looking for a solution, specifically for the UML diagrams, that is long term, that I could potentially use in the workforce.

I have done some searching, but have not found much on software that is accessible and can do what I need it to do.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or have experience with dealing with createing one or both of these types of diagrams.

Thanks,

TJ Breitenfeldt
