Alice, if it is a screen reader speaking that character, you can just put it into the speech dictionary for that screen reader. It is pretty easy to do for NVDA. It is possible for Jaws, but the process is, or at least used to be, pretty cumbersome.

Our math department and educational technology staff are creating accessible notes for a statistics class.  The dot that should read times or multiply is reading as "dot operator" from the html code.  I am researching how to code this properly so that it will read as multiply or times and would appreciate the expertise of the list.  Thanks- Alice
