Hello Bill:

I tried your suggestion, and it worked. The braille characters remain as I type them. Do you know if JAWS or VoiceOver have a similar feature such as this one?

Use Unicode Braille input (NVDA Braille prefs). This has the side benefit that you can enter arbitrary braille characters, so if you abbreviate the codes for your own use (such as by writing plus as 2357 instead of 5 235), it will not break.
