CHAPTER MEETING MINUTES
May 9 2026
.Meeting called to order on May 9 at 10:05 AM by president Chris Higley.
.Persons present were: Chris Higley (president), Doug Tremble(treasurer) Bob
Sellers, Don Mitchell (secretary), Kaye Kipp, Vicki Masterson, Peat
Masterson, Norm Larcon, Teresa Freeby, Sharon Zigler, Li Ling.
.April secretaries report presented for approval. Motion to approve made by
Doug Tremble; Seconded by: Kaye. Minutes approved.
.Doug Tremble presented the treasurers report. Current balance: $669.08.
Kaye moved to approve the report and Teresa seconded. The report was
approved. Doug mentioned that we are now being charged $15.00 service fee
per month. he wants to look in to moving our account to a credit union. It
was suggested that we use Columbia Credit Union for Doug's convenience. Doug
will investigate the possibilities.
.Doug Tremble gave a fund raising committee report. The committee met on
Friday May 1 at 7:00 PM. Bob, Kaye, Chris and Patricia attended the meeting.
Plans were started to hold our annual wine and cheese event in September. We
reviewed things members can do to help in preparing for the event.
Projected date for the event is September 13 2026. Talked about a fund
raising concert next year. We will set a date in October so we can get
ready to get the word out so we can try to fill the auditorium.
.Chris mentioned the WSSB (Washington State School for the Blind) student
event on June 8 at 3:30 PM at Crosley Bowl on Evergreen Blvd. We need
members to come and interact with the kids. The chapter is providing
refreshments.
.Doug announced that Theo and Li Ling, student members of our chapter, will
be graduating on June 5 at 9:30 AM.
.Chris announced that on May 16 the Washington State Services for the Blind
is putting on an event called "Stronger Together". This is an event for
blind children and their families at the Down town Hilton here in Vancouver.
Our chapter is going to have a table at the event sharing information about
the NFB. If any one would like to work at the table get in touch with Chris.
.On May 2 the NFB of Washington put on the "STEM to you" event at the
Washington Talking Book and Braille library in Seattle. This is an event to
encourage blind kids to learn about and become involved in science,
technology, engineering, and Math areas of science. We had three students
participating and they were particularly interested in the learning about
extracting DNA from strawberries. The theme for this event was forensic
science. The Oregon affiliate will be doing a "STEM to you" event in June in
Portland.
On June 21 through 26 the NFB of Washington will be doing our annual :"BELL
(Braille Enrichment for literacy and learning) on the WSSB campus. If you
are interested in participating contact Chris and she will put you in touch
with Chris Colcock who is directing the program. This year's theme is
blazing trails and the field trip will be a horse riding experience.
Some thought is being given to an adult Bell program in the future.
.National NFB convention is coming up in July the third through the eighth
in Austin Texas. The main hotel is sold out, but there is still room in the
overflow hotel.
.An extensive discussion of national convention took place to make new
members aware of the scope of the event.
.Chris led our "Chapter Chat" section. We talked a lot about the general
functions of the National federation of the blind. We shared thoughts with
one of our newly blind members on how to develop mobility skills. We talked
a lot about our experiences learning to use a white cane and how we felt
about the process of learning and becoming more independent. We talked about
independent shopping experiences. We discussed the talking book program and
how to use the new talking book e-reader.
.Kaye presented a philosophy discussion topic. "Does our organizations'
philosophy evolve over time? We shared and discussed things that have
changed over the years like our stance on audible traffic signals. A lively
and healthy discussion took place.
.We voted to except Vicki Masterson as a new member of the chapter. She was
warmly welcomed by the membership.
.The meeting was adjourned at 11:15 PM and the May Presidential release
number 560 was played.
