Hello,
This question comes up frequently on this list. There are several
ways to tackle this and it depends on the purpose. The manner that you
select will depend on who you are conveying the information.
If you are trying to demonstrate understanding of Genogram methods
to a class, the way that I used was a paper. The manner and purpose of the
genogram can be described in a paper that describes each relationship.
If you are using the genogram in therapy, the way that you select
will again depend on the audience. If you are demonstrating this to a
sighted client, usingt tactile methods such as raised lettering to guide you
in demonstrating the relationshipscan assist you. If you are working with a
client experiencing vision loss, tactile methods such as tinkertoys (if you
can find them), felt construction and pipe cleaners, and other methods can
prove effective if you select the genogram to reflect the genogram.
The genogram can be an effective tool in demonstrating the family
history of a client. If you are not comgfortable with its use, there are
other methods that you can use to reflect the relationships. There are
other counselors on this list that can offer additional siuggestions. I
hope that this helps!

Warmly,
