[HumanSer] Keeping long canes

Hello Cane Traveler:

I enjoyed working with folks in ALF, ADT & SNF facilities. Glad you are doing this work.

I use one of the telescoping canes when I'm going a place with a sighted guide when the long white cane would be a bit difficult, such as in a theatre.

But, for work or for walking place please give me a long rigid cane. I work with children and teens. My cane gets to be on the floor and elsewhere regularly. I do not much worry about keeping the handle especially clean. I wipe it off with a hand wipe or wash it with a paper towel. So, perhaps not quite as often as I wash my hands, but fairly often. It is, for example cleaner than my door knob, the chairs, or the various plush critters in my office. Come to think of it my therapeutic games are not as clean as my white cane.

Now that I'm in my mid-70s, kids have not been hiding it from me any more, but many do like a turn at using it.

I have started to take the shoulders of my elementary boys and allowing them to "drive me" to the distant lobby. Often they like to make car sounds as they help me and I keep track of them.

I work in assisted-living is in activity assistant so I’m on the go a lot especially since I work with dementia care. Like he tends to fall on the floor often. One can only do so much Hansina Tyser in a day. I do not plan to cave-in to a folding cancel any other suggestions? I also wonder if there’s a sidenote, the cans that slide up into the handle, sorry I forgot what they’re called, are they more sturdy than they used to be? Are used to have one and it collapsed on me all the time no matter how secure I tried to make it.

I got 30 bucks for attempting to do a home nasal swab kit. The guy thought I gave him awesome improvement suggestions. Hopefully they can make this totally accessible to Low Vision and totally blind. I did my best guys. Nice to get paid for educating peopleonce in a while.
