If anyone truly inspires you in any way enough to make you let the
world know about them, BBC's programme "Outlook" is holding a
contest, so you can nominate them and let the world hear their story.
Whoever wins would make it to the BBC. Before nominating anyone,
please read through this document.

Who will you nominate? Outlook is on the hunt for the world’s most
inspiring stories. Have a browse through our launch collection then
nominate an inspiring person you know.

be respected in this regard.
JUDGING CRITERIA
All nominations will be judged under the following criteria…
i) Nominees must have an extraordinary personal story to tell about
their own lives
ii) We are looking for unsung heroes, people who have not been
featured in a significant way by international media
iii) Their stories will demonstrate that they have shown great levels
of resilience and determination
They may have:
• shown extreme compassion and forgiveness.
• championed the unpopular and broken taboos in order to make their
communities a better place.
• undertaken extraordinary journeys of survival or battled against the
odds to follow their dreams.
• become a source of inspiration in the way they overcame a
significant obstacle in their life to achieve their goals.
• found themselves caught in a moment which prompted them to find
extraordinary levels of bravery and strength of character to achieve
something phenomenal.
These are all people who show us a better side of being human. Above
all their story will be an inspiration to all around them.
i) Their story will have impact. It will help listeners to better
understand an aspect of human nature or a region of the world.
ii) Nominees’ story must resonate with a global community and must
still be relevant today.
iii) Nominees must be 18 or over
THE JUDGING PROCESS
STAGE ONE

The nominations for the long-list will come from two areas.
• Members of the Outlook audience will suggest people for nomination;
these will be researched and assessed by the Outlook team. Those who
meet the judging criteria will be added to the long-list.
• At the same time the Outlook team will go through the archives and
select nominees from guests who have previously appeared on the
programme dating back to 2nd May 2016 (this was the closing date for
submissions for Outlook Inspirations 2016).
Both those nominated by the audience and the Outlook team will be
assessed by the above judging criteria. There are no quotas for those
nominees who are previous Outlook guests and those who are new,
audience suggestions. But the total of nominees on the long-list will
be 20.
STAGE TWO
A panel of senior journalists from the BBC – from within and outside
the Outlook team – will then assess the nominations on the longlist as
per the criteria above and produce a shortlist of 10.
STAGE THREE

A panel of international judges will then assess the shortlist of 10
according to the above criteria and will select three final winners.
Their names will be publicly announced on 27th June 2018. If for any
reason any of those three final selected winners is disqualified, the
judges will also chose a runner-up to take their place.
8. Some nominations may be read out on air with interviews. These uses
of nominations will have no bearing on and be entirely separate from
the judging process. However all nominees must be willing to be
interviewed as a condition of their nomination.
9. The BBC Outlook team may contact both the nominator and nominee to
verify facts and/or events and whether the relevant consents have been
obtained. This should not be interpreted as anything other than an
information gathering exercise.
10. Further on-going research may be undertaken by the BBC Outlook
team. The nominee may be contacted and asked for relevant contacts to
assist this research. The BBC reserves the right to disqualify a
nominee if such contacts are not provided.
11. Nominees may be asked by the Outlook team in May and June 2018, at
shortlisting stage, to disclose details of any and all criminal and
civil actions pending against them, or served against them plus any
unspent convictions. Entrants asked for this information must keep the
BBC informed of any changes to that disclosed up to the point the
winner is announced. This information will be shared with the
editorial policy advisor for Outlook Inspirations and be handled in
the strictest confidence and as with all personal information, in
accordance with the BBC’s privacy policy. If asked to disclose, the
duty to disclose remains up until 27th June 2018: if anything relevant
occurs between the initial disclosure and 27th June 2018 entrants are
required to inform the BBC.
12. The judging panel will consist of a panel of high-profile,
international individuals. These will be confirmed nearer the date.
Judging will take place in May 2018.
13. The winners will be publicly announced on BBC World Service
Outlook and online on 27th June 2018. Where possible, winners will be
expected to accept the award in person, at the BBC, in London on the
day. The BBC will provide suitable accommodation, travel and meal
expenses as deemed necessary. For the avoidance of doubt no other fees
or costs will be provided by the BBC.
14. The BBC's decision as to the shortlist and winners is final. No
correspondence relating to the awards will be entered into.
15. If the winner is unable to be contacted after reasonable attempts
have been made; the BBC reserves the right to select a runner up to
replace them.
16. Each of the winners will receive an "Outlook" Award. There are no
prizes, no cash alternative and the award cannot be sold or
transferred in any circumstances.
17. Nominees must agree to take part in any post-award publicity if required.
18. Winners will be recorded with the intention of broadcasting those
contributions on TV and radio as well as using them on all other
platforms including online.
19.The BBC reserves the right to: (i) vary these Terms and Conditions,
including but not limited to the opening and closing times of the
awards nominations period; (ii) disqualify any nominee who breaches
the rules or has acted fraudulently in any way; and (iii) cancel the
awards, at any stage, if in its opinion it is deemed necessary or if
circumstances arise outside its control.
20. The BBC, its sub-contractors, subsidiaries and/or agencies cannot
accept any responsibility whatsoever for any technical failure or
malfunction, problems with internet issues or any other problem which
may result in any nomination not properly registered.
21. The BBC will collect and process the personal information that you
provide for the purpose of either nominating an individual, or if you
are the nominee, of being selected for the Outlook Inspiration project
2018. The BBC will only collect your personal information for the
purpose of contacting a nominee to confirm the nominee’s consent to be
included in the selection process and to confirm details of their
personal story. The BBC will process this information on the basis of
its legitimate interest in producing journalistic output that is in
the public interest.
Your personal data will be held securely and will only be transferred
to our expert judges and to approved third parties who administer the
online forms.
The BBC will retain your data indefinitely, unless you request
otherwise, for editorial purposes such as conducting reviews of
previous Outlook programs in future years and monitoring the work and
progress of Outlook Inspiration nominees.
Please feel free to ask questions about what happens to your personal
data or let us know if you would like to amend or withdraw your
personal data by contacting us at outlookinspirations at bbc.com
Please be aware that if your entry is short listed and broadcast, the
BBC may not be able to delete your contribution. This is consistent
with the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines.
If you would like more information about how the BBC handles personal
information, please see the BBC’s Privacy Policy, available at
