Hi Kerri,
Check out this FAQ about upgrading to windows 8.  It looks like if you are running Windows 7 then you can automatically migrate your files and programs.  It is always a good idea to backup your data before doing an upgrade like this but I understand your concerns.  Anyway, here's the link:
