Hi Hope

It may be worth expressing your concerns to Valerie Yingling. She is the
Legal Program Coordinator of the NFB. She helped me and others with
accommodation issues with AP Exams. I would email her and explain your
situation and see what she says.

Her email is:
vyingling at nfb.org

Regards,
Nick Spohn

Subject: [NABS-L] Contacting someone from NFB about unequal access when
taking the MTEL's

Hello all. I'm hoping someone can help me. I just graduated from Missouri
State University with a Masters in teaching the blind and visually impaired.
Upon receiving my Masters I was offered a job at the Carroll Center in
Newton, Ma which I am very happy at. In order to obtain certification in
Mass as a TVI, I need to take and pass the MTEL's. Currently they are
offering an online version which people can take from home. According to the
people at the MTEL office, these online tests basically don't allow access
to our assistive tech like screen readers. I think they block them somehow.
I was told that if I wanted to take the test I should go to a testing center
because the computer based tests are not as restricted. I found out that
Pearson Vue is the developers of the online (at home) testing platform. I
am unable to go to a testing center (and frankly I shouldn't have to just
because I use a screen reader). I'm wondering if someone here can point me
in the right direction as to who to contact to see if Pearson Vue is indeed
inaccessible and how we can help them become more so.
I want to be able to take the test in my own home just like anybody else.
The fact that this program supposedly blocks screen reading technology
bothers me a bit.
Any help you can provide would be very much appreciated.

Hope Paulos
