Best wishes, Ted! /smile/ And welcome back to rainy Portland. /smile/

I'm really interested in the 2-week program you mentioned and will be
eagerly awaiting to hear all about it and how it works for you.

As for the flight and the adjustment... I applied to a couple of schools,
then things changed and I ended up owner training, but just thinking about
filling out the applications got me all nervous about flying the dog home
and what to do with it once it got there. Part of the what would happen
when I brought the dog home had to do with my then-hubby. Once I decided
for sure that he would not be part of the picture by the time I brought said
dog home, it all seemed so much easier, since I planned to live alone for a
few years and wouldn't have to worry about training anyone else. /smile/

I think your concerns are natural, but any number of people and dogs manage
the flight and transition just fine. /grin/ I'm sure you will, too!

Subject: [nagdu] I'm on my way soon

Hello all,

I've just recently rejoined this list after a couple months off. In the
interim, a lot has happened and I'm now getting ready to get my first guide
dog. I'm excited but also a bit anxious about whether everything will work
out OK.

I've been accepted by Guide Dogs for the Blind and I'll be going to their
Oregon campus for training at the end of this month. I'll be taking part in
their 2-week training program, which only started this year. GDB has been
very good to work with so far and things have moved much faster than the
other provider I applied to. I chose the Oregon facility because I used to
live there and I have some relatives (in-laws) in the area.

I think my biggest concerns now are the long flight home (I live in
Connecticut) and then how my new dog will adjust to our home and how we will
adjust to him/her. I know I'll learn a lot in the training, but this is
going to be a big adjustment.

Wish me well!

Ted Shelly
