So if I got a litter box with a top would that be okay?  I was thinking

This is, of course your decision but it may be premature. You can't know
what solution will work with what dog until you experience it. I would speak
with the school instructors where you intend to go and get some suggestions.
You are the only one who knows your living situation and your budget. Good
