Gail, you might like to consider Guide Dogs of America as a possible 
alternative to GDB.  They're located in Sylmar, California, just outside of 
LA.

The training director at GDA is a former long time GDB instructor who 
adheres to GDB's earlier training traditions, but maintains much smaller 
classes with a view to giving each student instruction tailored to his or 
her needs.  The pace is more relaxed, and the approach to those who know 
dogs is collegial.
