[nagdu] UK: Heartbreak' as bitten Newport guide dog must go

Marsha,

Oh, I am so with you there. In my ongoing struggle to acquire the resources
I need to buy the tools I need now that I am blind because all those years
of tax dollars I paid and the hidden taxes I'm still paying sure aren't
doing the trick, I've found an awful about just how harmful and how
widespread those attitudes are throughout the various levels of resource
providers who are the most avid promulgators. Yet these are the first to
look people in the eye and say with all seriousness that they just want to
help the blind by making them feel better about themselves. What's really
scary to me is how many people believe that, and how many of those are the
blind people who are being deprived of those resources.

Doing whatever we can do to break that self-reinforcing myth is the only way
to break it.

Tami Smith-Kinney

All,

I was by no means saying his actions or what he does not feel comfortable is
wrong. What I dislike are the misconceptions that the public will have after
a story like this. People reading that story now think, oh that poor blind
man. And just like I said there are "some" schools, who play into that
thinking, of poor blind people.

We all have differing abilities, I am by no means judging him for it. I hate
the slant the reporter put on this story.

One more reason we have to fight so hard, to break those misconceptions.

Marsha

This is an older gentleman. He may well have become blind when cane
skills were not really taught, or taught with a short cane. Or, I don't
know about in the UK, but in the US, many older people have trouble
getting any kind of blind guy training, including cane skills. Or, the
ever-present possibility, the journalist is playing up the poor blind guy
angle.
When I'm between dogs, I *hate* going into New York with my cane. I can,
but I sure don't like it. If I said as much to a reporter, wanna bet he'd
turn "don't like" into "can't"? And GDBA seems to play the poor blind guy
card way more than any school here could get away with, IMO.
And Lisa, while I appreciate your sentiments, the UK is not a third-world
country!
