Hi Jessica,
We have dogs from many schools and owner-trained dogs on this list. Mine is
from The Seeing Eye named Landon and he's seven - had him for five years.
He's a Lab/Golden cross.

You can't correct with a flat collar. To me, your dog is still very new to
you if you just got him this past October. I would still use the equipment
that the school issued you and correct the dog in the manner you were taught
by your instructor. It is very important that you and your dog get off to a
good start - especially if he is dog distracted. My dog can still be dog
distracted or distracted by other stuff and I've had him five years. I have
a chain collar on him but I also have a head collar - the Gentle Leader that
he gets put on him when he really wants to blow me off!

I've had really mellow and easy-going dogs who could do fine in a flat
collar. If your dog becomes very compliant with verbal reprimands - when
he's older - a flat collar can work. But, for now, I'd stick to what he was
trained in. JMHO

Is this dog a first dog or have you worked others? I'm on my eighth dog -
used dogs sinse 1973.
