Hi, Bertha,
I went to the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind many ears ago.
No, I didn't graduate from there as I transfered to Aurora Hinkley High School to finish up out here in Aurora, CO.
The type of cane I used when I began to learn was an aluminumn cane that had a hoot at the top of it and the handle which was rubber resembled a golf club type.
Many of those types of canes still exist, probably, but I'm seeing more with no candy kane-like hooks.
Many that I come across now go straight up and down as you described looking like a telephone pole.
One day if I am able to get the chance, I'd like to make a trip back out to CSDB to see what the campus looks like.
I've heard many changes have happened down there a long time ago, wo was interested in checking it out.
As for guide dog users, there was one who worked at CSDB named Bill McGuerry (am not sure of the spelling for his last name)
Don't think he works there anymore as he began there as a teacher in my last year there.
Although I'm glad that I did learn cane skills in the very beginning, I'm still happy that I made the decision down the road to work with a four-legged furry partner.
*Smiles*
