Yeah, the school's evaluator will do a more accurate job of evaluating your
mobility skills. they know you had mobility training - was mandatory when
you went to get a dog in the past. Now, the younger mobility instructors go
to sessions about guide dogs so they will be able to tell their students
about guide dogs. O&M students come to The Seeing Eye from all over the
country to spend three days of classes, actually working a dog under
sleepshades, and observing guide dog students while they are there. the
week they are there, it is really fun for us because they get to eat lunch
with us and sit at our tables and they and we get to interact then. it is a
great learning opportunity for them.

I remember the days when the O&M instructors wwere in a war against the
guide dog schools and it finally dawned on them that they weren't going to
be replaced with guide dog schools. O&M instruction is still required
before one gets a guide dog. they have now learned that they compliment
each other and no more jealousies! The O&M instructors teach the mobility
skills to blind folks and the guide dog schools teach another tool in which
to utilize the skills we learned with the O&M instructors.
