[nagdu] taxi refusal in Brooklyn, new York

Oh, I never tell them that I am bringing a dog with me. I had a cab driver once tell me I should in case the driver had allergies. I said that it was my right to be in the cab, and if the people had allergies to dogs, then maybe they ought not drive. I also suggested that probably we wouldn't be there long enough to aggravate it in most cases. He thought I was a jerk. Fine with me.

The presence of a service animal is irrelevant, as the company has no need for this information and should not use such information to treat us in a discriminatory manner. I have frequently asserted that we should not give advance notice we will be traveling with a guide dog, bringing a guide dog to a hotel, or will be accompanied by a guide dog when making restaurant reservations. All such a thing does is give an alert to those places of business that they might need to do something "special" for us. This something special is generlly something that is discriminatory. We lessent the chance of discrimination by not giving advance notice.

I have been in the city a few times especially when I am going to the cruise ports or trade shows. Even here on Long Island, I don't mention that I have a dog, so far I haven't had a problem, but there is always will be one.
