I think they come from folks who are not necessarily comfortible with
they're condition. I've tried the political correctness thing and it
usually doesn't work exceptt when addressing non disabled folks who as a
rule aren't comfortible with us. My daughter calls herself deaf and I'm
blind. My wife calls herself a wheelchair user. Although the latter
implies that she can decide whether or not to us the thing! I personally
find that refering to my condition as blind sure clears up a lot! I do
aggree with Nicole that it shouldn't be the first thing one knows about us.
I hated being refered to as "Blind Larry"! I once had someone fololow me
around downtown and finally I asked him what was it he wanted! He was
having a really hard time wondering what to call my blindness! I told him
you refer to me by my name first!
