[nagdu] Dogs interacting

I don't really believe that the dogs have an inherent need to interact with other dogs, and I've never seen much difference in them one way or the other. Mine now and all others have been just as thrilled to see other dogs when, say, we go to meetings. To insure peace, it is better if I introduce my dog to your dog if he has never seen that dog before. I ask first, suggesting that we put them (or at least him) at sit. He sniffs, and then he is done with his aggressive behavior. I would never do it intentionally without asking. Doing this has caused me considerably less headache though.

I know this type of situation is handled diferently by each handler, but in my mind, the dog is working--period. So I want him completely focused on his job even when he is jsut standing or sitting by my side or is under a chair or table. The Seeing Eye refers to that as passive work, and the word work implies that the dog is on duty.

I would hope that I would not have to become forceful with my request, but that could certainly happen. If multiple requests are ignored, I put some serious distance between me and that person from then on any time we encounter each other at that or subsequent events.
