[nagdu] Thunder Shirt topic

Hmmmm.... Well, now since the Thunder Shirt has come up what experiences
has anyone had with them. I am familiar with the Storm Defender cape, but
have no idea whether or not the shirt also offers any help with fears of
thunder.

I met the inventor of the Storm Defender several years ago. This cape comes
in several sizes to fit any dog. What it does is to dissipate the static
charge that builds up on a dog's coat before and during a thunder storm.
What the engineer postulated and proved is that it is not really the thunder
that bothers a dog, but rather the static charge build-up that builds in a
dog's coat before the storm even arrives. This charge gives the dog a
prickly feeling which worsens and then the thunder hits. So, the dog
becomes fearful of the charge, but really shows the fear when the sounds of
thunder begin.

The Storm Defender, as I said, dissipates the charge. By putting the cape
on the dog as soon as the animal shows signs of discomfort and then using
treats and other methods to distract and positively distract him or her one
can teach the animal that there is nothing to fear from the thunder sounds.

Unfortunately for us the Storm Defender came out after I moved to
California. We never got to try it with Roselle. However, I believe the
engineer's conjecture as Roselle always began showing signs of fear up to a
half hour before a thunder storm became evident to us. She always was our
early warning system.

Thoughts?
