[nagdu] Barking Puppies!

Minh,
These are strategies that I devised on my own from the things I
learned during training. While I commend GDB for implementing negative
punishment into their training program, let's face it, this method
does not work for all dogs. Rather than subtracting or withholding all
interaction, reaction, and rewards from your dog, motivate your dog to
do something that is good and yields rewards. I have not tried
negative punishment with my golden, but that is because the "touch"
cue and the obedience routine work very effectively in our case.
Teaching the "touch" cue is very simple, and it will be easy for you
since you already know about clicker training, and attended a program
that utilizes, almost relies upon, it heavily. I will discuss two
methods of teaching "touch," one involving food rewards, and one
excluding food rewards for those who choose not to use them.
With a treat in your fist, offer your fist to your dog. When she
focuses on you, licks or nuzzles your fist. Click! and treat. Repeat
this 2-4 more times, and if your dog is successful, start introducing
the cue. When you offer your fist, the moment she touches her nose to
your fist, say "touch," click! and treat. Repeat this several times.
If your dog has performed consistently, start saying "touch," then
offer your empty fist. When your dog obeys, click! and reward her. Do
this several times until she is consistently obeying the cue. If you
move on to a different step and she is not getting it, just go back to
the previous step and work with her.
For training without treats, offer your fist or open palm to your dog.
If they are not paying attention, call her name or pat your thigh,
still offering your hand. When she becomes interested in your hand,
sniffing, licking, or nuzzling it, click! and reward her with verbal
or physical praise. Repeat 2-4 times. If she is successful at this
step, start introducing the cue. When she touches her nose to your
hand, say "touch," then click! and praise her. Do this several times.
When she is consistent, start giving the cue, click! and praise her
for obeying. Repeat this step until it is consistent.
Be sure to teach this to your dog in a quiet place with little or no
distractions. When your dog is successful and consistent in this
environment, gradually increase the distraction level and location at
which you practice this cue. This is a command that can work in open
places like parks or fields. Trust me, I've looked silly excitedly
exclaiming "touch!" across a park at an eager golden dashing for
dachshunds, but he whirled around and flew toward me, aiming for my
fist like he had been headed toward those dachshunds a moment earlier.
Some dogs obey this cue as though it's a natural impulse, other dogs
are very poky and wishy-washy.
Hope this helps.
