Unfortunately, many O and M instructors teach routes and do not teach the
general concepts so they can be used in most or all situations. I think the
last time I had O and M instruction was in 1971 and the instructors I had
back then did not want us to learn things by rote but wanted us to use the
brain and senses and to let our memory and our environment and our canes to
be our guide.

I have found that walking with a guide dog has also enhanced parts of my o
and m repertoire of alternative techniques that have nothing directly to do
with the dog. These mainly have to do with orientation and I find when
using my cane, all of the travel techniques I've learned enhance one
another.

Daniel,
If I got O&M every time I went to a new place I would be getting it
every day! I think good O&M teaches you to apply your skills wherever you
may be, so there is no need to get an orientation every time!

Hey guys, as yall know I'm going to be moving to a new town for college
quite soon. While I was in training (I can't remember if it was an
instructor or not) someone off-handedly said something like, always have a
sighted person help you on a new route or something.I've always been a
really independent person trying new routes and what not. I can understand
getting some orientation help in a new place but for everything? How do yall
feel about going new places without an advanced orientation session or such?
Do yall usually stick to a preplanned set of routes or do yall sometimes go
new places just for the heck of it? I'm asking this from a dog users
perspective, how does your dog react on a new route or a place, and
especially if any of yall have moved to a new city or home, how did yall get
used to the new surroundings?

Thanks,

Dan
