[nagdu] Student with dog allergy

Tai,

I would be concerned about leaving such a new dog for an extended period of
time given that the dog is already under additional stress adjusting to its
new life.

The University is responsible for providing equal accommodations for both
parties and while it's important for you to be part of that accommodation
process, it's not up to you alone to come up with a solution. Ideally the
process should be led by the University and directly involve both you
and the student with the allergy since he is best equipped to know what he
can and cannot tolerate. This three-way interaction allows for the greatest
possible flexibility when exploring accommodations.

That said, alternatives to being separated from your new dog might include
taking turns attending class by video conference using Skype; assigning a
larger room/area to hold the class; installing a temporary air filter unit
in the room; asking the student if wearing a "dust" mask might solve the
problem; and so on.

Best,
Ginger

Subject: [nagdu] Student with dog allergy

Hello all. Next Week, I am taking a mediation course that will be held in a
very small room with only 12 students. One of the students has a dog
allergy. He has a severe reaction whenever a dog is in the room. I am
wondering how I should deal with this situation. I am not opposed to crating
lava and possibly leaving her in the dean's office. However, I am concerned
that leaving her there all day every day for the entire week might be a
problem. She does not mind being left alone and does not whine, but I have
never left her alone for extended periods of time. The longest I have left
her alone is three hours. I will be able to see her on brakes and take her
outside, so I should not need to leave her for more than three hours at a
time. What do you think? How would you handle this situation? I want to be
sensitive to this students needs. I know how serious some allergic reactions
can b. also, lava will more than likely just sleep, since we will not be
working all day. Any input is greatly appreciated.
