[nagdu] Saying my goodbyes to Motley

Even if those collars are used as a last resort, I don't think that that is
a good idea. The dog was barking because he was afraid, so just making him
stop barking is not going to make the fear go away. As a matter of fact,
JMHO, forcing a dog to suppress a natural reaction in reaction to fear might
make the dog react in other, more dangerous ways. Finally, I think that it
is important to remember that, even if a school gives a person a dog who is
not afraid of anything, that does not mean that that dog is immune to
developing fears. People come from all walks of life to receive guide dogs.
Unless a dog is trained in the environment in which the dog will be working,
it is hard to expose the dog to everything, and, even then, new things can
come up at any time.

Motley was scared of the balloons, when they were in the air and on the
ground.

At Pilot, we tried to expose him, but to no avail.

He just kept barking at them, and nothing we did to correct the barking was
working.
It got to the point where we had to use an electronic collar on Motley to
get him to stop barking at the balloons.

Even then, he still didn't respond.
Pilot used the electronic collar as a last resort for Motley.

They normally don't use those collars for dogs.

I made it clear to Pilot that I would like a poodle that isn't afraid of
balloons, because I run in to them all the time at Kroger.

I will keep you guys posted on when I get my next poodle.

Chantel.
