[nagdu] Ownership; what about other countries?

Tracy,

One benefit of owner-training -- for me, at least -- is that I could
train my dog to run free and use my own judgment about when and where to
let her do that. /smile/ That's also a factor on my list of reasons I
intend to owner-train again, when it comes right down to it. When I was
first training and working my dog, I had numb hands and would drop the
harness handle and leash both, so it was a good thing she would come
when I called and knew how to behave without my having hold of her! That
isn't so much a problem anymore (though I managed somehow a few weeks
ago, much to my own disgust), but we do enjoy a number of activities for
fun and exercise that we couldn't if she didn't have that training. I've
heard various reasons why the US programs are so against free running
and off leash training, but I'm not sure I truly understand them. Then
again, if I got a dog from a program, it probably wouldn't have that
foundation training when it was young, so I would be much more cautious
than I am with my current dog, in addition to honoring any agreement or
contract with the program.
