[nagdu] Obedience

Hello,
I typically do not give food rewards while doing obedience at home, but if I am out on a walk and have to do obedience to get Pascal to focus, I will occasionally use kibble. I like to do obedience before his mealtimes. I will have him do sit, down, stay, heel, and come before I scoop out his food. Or to make it more challenging and distracting for him, I will get his food out, set the bowl down in the kitchen, and then have Pascal do obedience in the living room.
As far as food refusal, I would start out by placing the food on the floor out of the dog's reach. Once the dog starts to ignore the item better, move it closer to the dog, so that they could grab it. If you think the first couple of times that your dog will grab the item, try using something that you know will not hurt them if they eat. My dog is good about ignoring the food set-ups, but not so much the bits of food on restaurant floors. He knows when he is being set up /smiles/.

I never give treats for obedience. I think it is taught more now than it used to be. We were told to do it if we were having trouble, but it should be a part of their kibble rations and not something extra. I just pretty much don't give any.

Willa's done that a few times I just put her back in a down and wait a few seconds and then give the sit command. She seems to understand that she isn't to get back up unless I say to. When shpops up like that I don't praise I tell her down and waitand then asfora sit and then praise. and no treat. If she waits for the command and then sits on the command I praise and treat. This has worked very well. Also, I like to mix up the obedience commands and throw in a few touch commands sometimes just to see if she's actually listening and paying attention. Also, start with the food far enough where he can't reach it. I mean far enough where if you have to pull him back he still won't reach it. Use your clicker with the food may be very helpful. I know some people like to just use it for targeting but I have found it very useful for patterning desirable behaviors as well.

enough to keep Krokus from snatching the food without some help from someone. He's really fast, and getting the food would defeat the whole purpose. But I know it can be done, and would like to know the trick.

beat or two after the down before giving the sit, so the dog was responding to the command and not anticipating. But it seems different at TSE. It was down sit down sit down sit, with no real time between. Krokus expects that, and my classmates did it that way, so I was on my first or 2nd down/sit and they had done 3. Seems odd to me, because Krokus pops up a second after I say down, thinking that's how it's done. Seems to me he should be waiting for my command.
