[nagdu] Taking Our Dogs To The Zoo

Oh, I've never not taken my dog to a zoo. I've been to two of them with
dogs, and when the Kansas legislature wanted to exempt zoos from allowing
guide dogs, we went to bat to keep that from happening. It was someone else
who felt that way. *smile*

Cindy,

When my wife, merry Schoch, told a trainer about our work with zoos,
she was asked why we would even want to take our dogs to a zoo! Her answer
was, "Why not!" If we intend to live the lives we want and part of that is
enjoying a day at the zoo with our grandchildren, our dogs and the zoo
animals must be acclimated to each other! Please do not let other's
limitations of our possibilities become reality by accepting their limiting
beliefs about what is possible! Every day we raise the expectations of blind
people because low expectations are the obstacles that stand between blind
people and our dreams!

Fraternally yours,

Marion Gwizdala, President

High expectations create unlimited potential for the blind!

Taking your dog to the zoo is a matter of choice just like these other
things. If schools say you shouldn't, it could be their concern about
distraction, but there has been a considerable effort in NAGDU to make it
possible to have zoos accept dogs.

Hello, everyone. I was reading the responses regarding taking our dogs
through haunted houses. Someone commented that schools would ask us to not
take our dogs to the zoo. I have a chance to visit the Los Angeles Zoo with
a group at school. I do not understand what the deal is with not taking our
dogs to the zoo. Is there something I am not getting here? Please explain
to me why we should or should not take our guides to the zoo. Thanks.
Elise and Becky
