[NAGDU] NAGDU Digest, Vol 166, Issue 17

Sorry guys, I am having a challenge understanding exactly what the issue is, and where to go with it. Who can help clarify this? So far, the only thing I am gleaning from the text is something like that users of untrained - and trained - service dogs would need written verification to rent a dwelling there, but there is confusion.

If anyone can lay out a couple of clarified points, this would be helpful at least for me…and so also…probably for others. I am looking for this:

1. What exactly would be the limitation in the bill proposal to us, and other real service dog users?
2. Whom exactly should we write to there in the legislature - if we are not from that state - so that we can help to provide input?
3. Two or three talking points that we can all tap into would facilitate mass input from many of us around the country.

Can anyone help clarify this? Thanks.

> The big issue with ADI using the term assistance animal is the fact that the ADA defines service animal, not assistance animal. It is very confusing for the public when service animal means any dog trained to perform a task to mitigate a persons? disability legally, but then another source uses service animal to mean all task trained animals other than guide dogs and yet another source uses service dog to mean mobility dog. I?ve even seen one program alone using service dog in all three ways in their own educational material. I think ADI adopting the term assistance dog just increases the confusion. Since I would say the ADA is arguably the most widely applicable law, it makes sense to use the terminology it defines generally IMO.
> Since the FHA and ACAA use assistance animal to cover both SDs and ESAs, I?ve never understood ADIs big push to make service dog and assistance dog synonymous. And yes, I know this proposed law is relevant to the FHA, but the terminology usage carries over between all three federal laws in terms of public understanding.
