[NAGDU] AKC

We haven’t done AKC’s “obedience”, as in any form of competition. But for grins, we went through the AKC Good Citizen course. It wasn’t a competition. It wasn’t a basic obediance class which of of course wouldn’t have been of interest to us. Instead, it turned out to be an excellent tune-up supplement to our original training. There was some basic obediance stuff, but in an environment, of tremendous induced distraction.

By this, I mean, in two ways - - - both of them in terms of becoming an even better well-greased machine of a team together in distracting environments. The first was distraction built into the course itself. There was a fair amount of work where they put us through focus walking together amidst a surrounding of noise and opportunities for startle distractions, such as folks walking around with kids toys like the quacking duck towed on a rope, jumbles of rattling junk going by, wheelchairs zig-zagging amongst us, and people lifting and dropping the back wheels of derelict shopping carts on the ground next to us (bang, bang, bang), as they spiraled around us or came through from behind. It was actually a really cool tuning, especially because we were good at it by the nature of our training already. It added another grounding angle on how well we were doing with distraction.

The second aspect of benefit, was that we were trained professionals…thrown into a room half populated with idiots. Everyone else there were civilians…some who should have had basic obediance a long time before entering this class. Amongs them were barkers, yappers, and snarlers. Safe and under leash control of course as demanded and reinforced by the instructor… But like for many of us working teams, like a bad day walking through ESA challenges at the airport. As many of us know, it’s only part the dog. There were some real idiots; who as handlers were oblivious. Their dogs constantly going off was a function a lot like the irony we see in bad ESA dog behavior, for which the cure would be obediance training, but even more, psychotherapy for the owner. This occasion was really good for us, because it presented us, in an enclosed space, over a period of time, a lot of challenges concentrated in a good way to tune little edges on our training that made us even better.

We all get our edge dulled over time just in living. I can certainily feel it now just by the lowered amount of travel, and interactions, in daily life from the Covid business. I’ve always noticed how the more Metukah and I work together, the better we are just as a matter of course. If you ever feel that you’d like to sharpen your pencil so to speak, I’d recommend dipping back into a little training. For us, particularly because of how we were professionally dialed in together, it was a neat experience.
