[nfb-talk] War Dog Cemitary on Guam.

Dear Kat,

I have a favor to ask.
Back in the late 1950's, when I lived on Guam, I was a Boy Scout in the Troop at NAS Agana Guam.
My family took a tour around the island and we passed a sign that said something to the effect of, "War Dog Cemetery of the Pacific."
I do not recall just where it was now, but we stopped to look at it and I was agass at its condition.
It was over grown with weeds and the jungle was starting to take it over.
I got two other scouts to help me and we spent a couple of weekends cleaning it up, pulling weeds, cutting back the jungle, fixing signs and head stones and painting the fence.
We read some of the accounts about how some of the dogs came to be there and the bravery they showed in protecting our G.I.'s in combat.
I know that we felt very proud of them, the dogs, and what we did to honor their memory and service.
I would like to see if anyone else has taken care of that cemetery and what shape it is in now.
Can you see if you can find out and let me know.
If no one has taken care of it I would like to know so I can contact my Congressman and find out why a war cemetery has not been cared for and what they are going to do about it.
I recently saw a documentary on the War Dogs and was surprised to learn that Guam was the first place they were used and just how much the dog handlers felt for their dogs even some 60 years after their combat experiences were over.
I remember reading on account of a certain dog that won the Silver Star by grabbing a hand grenade that was tossed into a fox hole with 4 Marines in it. He jumped out of the fox hole and laid down on top of the bomb before it went off, saving the 4 Marines.
There were other such stories about other dogs buried there and I think that their sacrifice should be noted and remembered and all proper honors shown a brave soldier who has given their life for this Country.

I am willing to help raise money to see to it that they are honored as they should be.
To hear how some of these Marines talked about their dogs made me cry for them, the dogs.
If you can find out anything for me I would appreciate it.
If you can get me contact info for the Boy Scout council or the Marine HQ there or the Governor's office, I will contact them to get some action.

I thank you for what ever you can do.

David Evans, NFBF andGD Jack.
