[nfb-talk] Here We Go Again

Hello Jeanette and everyone,

This isn't the first time Extreme Make-Over Home Edition has remodeled a
home for a blind person. There were several programs featuring make-overs
for blind individuals and families. Every time no blind individuals were
asked to be a part of the make-over crew. While these folks got a new home
much was done to reinforce the mistaken ideas about the inability of the
blind to live independently, know how to get around their home, etc. When
portrayals of the blind by this program result in apartment managers
believing that we're unable to find our own housing and should seek the
services of a realter or a professional apartment locator it's time the plug
was pulled on how this program portrays the blind individuals and families
they help.

i guess i just don't understand what the big deal is. lots of folks have had
their houses remodeled by this tv show and for some reason i get the
feeling that because they are blind, some folks on this list think they
should have turned it down. also these folks may not know thsat some of the
things they said would be taken wrong, after all remember, these folks as i
recall, haven't been blind that long unlike some of us who have been dealing
with visual loss for quite a while. i have several friends through nfb who
are losing their sight or have been losing their sight for a short period of
time and their perspective is quite different than ine sometimes.
