Joseph Carter said he would take blindness over stupid in the view of 
others. This reminds me of the late Theresa Herron, who had been NH state 
president from 1982 to 1988, and on the National board from 1983 to 1987. 
She met someone in a hotel bar, and leaving she did not see a small step, 
and fell flat on her face. She took her folding cane out of her purse, and 
always used it from then on. She would rather show her blindness than be 
thought a drunk. Ed Meskys
