[nfb-talk] Convention in Orlando for 5 years

I could go for Hawaii *smile*
I was there a semester and would love an excuse to spend the money to take
some family members out that way.
I also have never been to Alaska. (Hey, it's summer after all.) Or while
we're at it, go to Jamaica or the Bahamas...
I know, won't happen, but I can dream.

Hi Mike and all,

I also have to think there is a preference on the part of our national
leadership to focus less time and energy on finding new locations each year
and on doing the work of the organization -- which is to make sure the voice
of the blind is heard, not to run conventions.

Therefore locking in arrangements for half a decade must result in a
significant amount of relief on the part of the office in Baltimore and
presumably free up time better spent on fighting discrimination against the
blind.

However, it also can be said we have far more staff on hand to do the
legwork than we once did back when we were moving all around the country.

I say let's all go to Hawaii... We'll take a year off, save some money, sell
tons of the World's Finest Chocolate, and have the convention of a
lifetime... What say ye? *smile*

You and I are on the same wavelength. I can't speak to California but I know
it's gotten *much* harder to get *any* contract concessions from hotels here
in the state of Washington in the time between 1996 and now. It's a whole
different ballgame. But, like you, I wish we had conventions out here.
Either that or charter an airline. (grin)

Hi Mike,

Well, I'm not one to casually quaff poison, but I wonder if there has been
much effort to secure sub-$100 rooms outside of the south in recent years
(Detroit notwithstanding)? We got fabulous rates at the Anaheim Hilton in
1996, after all.

I also think that perhaps $80-$90 could be considered, given that many
conventioneers share rooms, and, that we've shortened the week by one day.

I very much appreciate the conscientiousness of our leadership and
convention planners to keep costs as absolutely low as possible given the
economic hardships too many of our fellow federationists experience, but I
do wish we would at least make an effort to spread our wings a little
further... And perhaps we have done so, but to no avail, I simply don't know
personally.

I don't think 2018 has been set yet. And the emails here point out that one
person's tea is another person's poison. But I do wish the conventions were
out here on the Left Coast occasionally. But unless enough people vote to
allow rates to go up to over $100 a night at a minimum, it ain't a-gonna
happen.

It would be great to have it in FL in 2018! I'd try to make that one! As to
the east coast, why not?
Several cities on the east coast could handle the convention size. As I live
on the east coast, this would be much more convenient to me. I could get a
ride or take the train.
It was in Phililidelphia one year and that would be a convenient place to
have it again.

Hi Mike,

So we will be in Orlando in 2018?

I seem to recall that our 1996 convention in Anaheim, the last one on the
west coast, rivaled, but did not beat, our attendance in New Orleans in
1997. And New Orleans, I believe, has not been beat for attendance in the
14 years since we were there.

I have to believe that Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Salt Lake,
and a half dozen other places could easily handle a convention the size of
ours. I have to think that it helps our bottom line to be on the east
coast, or no more than a 2.5 hour flight from it, as we send a whole lot of
people from Baltimore, which could make a west coast venture expensive.

Ray:

That's also what I remember.

I don't remember who asked but the 2013 convention may not be at the Rosen
Shingle Creek Resort but may be at one of the other rosen properties, as,
for example, the rosen Center which was one of the overflow hotels. One of
the contract terms for conventions at rosen properties is that Rosen Hotels
gets to choose the venue from three (I believe) Rosen properties in the
area.

I will forbear from entering extensively into the debate about where
conventions should be held. In fact, I, too, wish conventions could be held
in the West. For some of us, airfare tends to erase much of the savings we
get with our wonderfully low hotel rates. However, as David Andrews has
pointed out, when we were at hotels West of the Mississippi, we had much
smaller attendance than we do now. We're too big for many of the hotels we
used to use and not quite large enough for the megahotels that handle
conventions of ten thousand or more. As Joseph Carter has pointed out, we
face a Hobson's choice in trying to negotiate convention venues. And we're
having to eat shuttle costs.

But even though cost of air travel to Orlando from Portland, Oregon, was
outrageous, this was one of the best conventions I've been to in many, many
years.

too high and too frequent to be comfortable. There isn't even lobby wifi
access without a fee, and the hotel is full of cellular dead zones.
