Mr. Ortiz:

(1) Reread my name -- it's Freeman -- F R E E M A N.

(2) Whom do you think pays for the NFB listservs? You, I and everyone else
who contributes to NFB does so. When compared to trying to get kids (adopted
or natural-born) back from social workers to their blind parents, or, when
compared to trying to get minimum wages for all disabled workers, do you
think most NFB members would deem it appropriate to pay for political
debates which can just as easily be held in other venues? If so, I urge you
to contact President Maurer at <OfficeOfThePresident at nfb.org> and try to
convince *him.*

Incidentally, where do you live? Who's your affiliate President? I urge you
to have a heart-to-heart with him or her about this.

Cheers!

Mike

Subject: [nfb-talk] About 501C status.RE: nfb-talk Digest, Vol 55, Issue 114

Dear Mr. Friedman,

When I worked in an ILC here in NYC, our ILC had both 501C and 503C status.
And in my orientation and peer group meetings where I was both the presenter
and the moderator, I and anyone in our organization or groups was permited
to speak about anything political as long as we were referring to anything
that was prior to the given literal calendar date of the day we were holding
our meeting. Of course, no one was permitted to endorse any political party
outright, either staff members or our visiting clients. But in our meetings
in public on our ILC property, we still had incredibly stimulating political
discussions. We also discussed political policies and their impact on the
disabled even when we attributed those policies to one party or another.
And as far as my former Executive Director was concerned, all of that was
perfectly legal and jeopardized nothing.

Anyway, I didn't think those kind of guidelines would have applied to NFB
members expressing their personal opinions in a chat room. Of course, It
would be inappropriate for NFB staff and officials to do that, but applying
that guideline to NFB members is being a little overly cautious in the legal
sence.

Of course, I also completely understand that if the discussions group's
policy, whether official or unofficial, is to avoid political debates and
focus on issues kmore directly related to blindness, then all NFB members
who use the chat room should comply.

Not that I want to start a new argument. Sincerely, I don't. I just wanted
to make that observation for everyone.

Respectfully, Robert Ortiz.

The operative question is what "talking politics" really means. If we can't
even agree upon the facts that bare upon an issue, how can bit be rationally
discussed? For some reason, on these lists, such discussions degenerate into
"I'm right and you're wrong" -- said by at least one party on each side of
an issue -- which then degenerates into "You're a schmuck!" "Naw; it's *you*
that's the schmuck!" and it goes downhill from there.

For good or ill, we in NFB care very deeply about the issues of the day --
or many of us do -- and are convinced that absolutely everything -- from the
love life of Lindsay Lohan to home fire safey -- is blindness-related and
it's our God-given right to determine the relevance to blindness of a given
issue, no matter what David Andrews, the Moderator, says.

Aside from human frailty, though, I'll give you a practical reason to hold
down the political discussions to a dull roar: being the loyal NFB member
that you are, I presume you wish NFB to succeed in its mission at minimal
financial cost. However, if NFB condones explicit political statements on
its list, it's quite possible that some will construe these statements as
being NFB policy and, being political, cast doubt upon our entitlement to
our nonprofit 501(c) status. Remember that IRS taxes organizations that
lobby. That's why we are *very* careful to say that we educate -- we don't
lobby.

Cheers!

Mike Freeman

Just an observation. Deffinetely not trying to cause trouble but, on a list
where we can push our Federation buisness, we can't talk a little politics
without offending others! Again, just an observation, nothing more!
