You are, of course, correct. Such responses are not at all unusual from
senators or representatives of either party, of course. A more personalized
response would be rather unusual and it has been my experience that these
usually come only from politicians with whom one has developed a personal
relationship. This is why our leadership constantly hammers at us to develop
such relationships when possible.

Again, although such canned responses are regrettable from our point of
view, if you consider how many people write to senators and representatives,
they would do nothing but answer email were they to devote the sort of
personalized attention to them that all of us would like. President Lincoln
answered most of his mail himself by hand (typewriters were relatively rare
then) but I dare say he'd be swamped were he to be alive now and practicing
the same behavior.

Mike

Seems like canned crap to me. Sorry y'all; but, frankly, I consider that
very much a non answer. Why? Simple. It addresses nothing of our
concerns specifically. But, of course, you know this right? I could have
written her about garbage pick up on the moon and gotten back the same
response. "Garbage pick up on the moon? How rediculous!" you say; and, of
course, you're right. Makes the point all the same.

people like you is essential if I am to be not only the Senator from
Maryland, but also the Senator for Maryland.
