I think that Bill died on August 23, and that a memorial service, part of
which was online, was held on September 11.
Bill was one of the "phone phreaks" of the 1960s to 80s who learned how to
bypass the telephone companies' signaling routines in order to make free
long-distance calls to all sorts of places. An audio book on BARD,
"Exploding the Phone" describes this era and many of the people involved.
About a half dozen of them were blind, and I had met some of them.
Bill was one of the fortunate people who was able to turn his hacking
knowledge into a job with the phone company. In more recent years he worked
a lot on the console mode screen reader for Linux, and with Android devices.
