Peter;
How about a resolution, next year.
I have not tried to use the device, but have used the sound device, now twice at convention.
I and I am sure many more, will back you up. I can see, maybe a $5 payment, but my id card, no way! I would just walk out!!!

Subject: [nfb-talk] Assistive Listening and Identity Theft

Good evening Dan and everyone,

	The one issue we've run into with borrowing such devices for assistive listening or to hear audiodescription is that some venues insist that they hold your ID card and return it to you when you turn in the device. Fortunately some of our movie theatres such as Santicos in San Antonio do not require you to pay a deposit for the use of the device or hold a form of identity until you are through using the device. Any venue with such a policy when it comes to holding identity of any form belonging to someone using one of these devices opens that person up to the possibility of identity theft. There are other ways entities such as entertainment venues can secure their property without requiring patrons to compromise their personal identity by surrendering any form of identification to the venue for the use of the device. If you asked me this practice needs to be outlawed given the problem of identity theft in this country. It's great that services like assistive listening for the hearing impaired and audio description are offered by various entertainment venues but blind and deafblind persons needing to use such devices should not be forced to compromise their personal identity to do so.

 I contacted the NFB's Deafblind Division concerning this matter but could not urge them to take this issue seriously. All the best.

We have seen several of these movies at our local AMC theater. The first few times we went, we had to explain what the device was, and even insist that it existed. Lately though they know exactly what we want, and it has worked just about every time.

One thing that I have found that works is unplugging the cheapo earphones that they give you with the device, and plugging in earbuds from an iPhone or a similar device. The audio is improved, and they leak less sound into the general theater.

Concord NH and one in Raleigh NC. I saw THE BUTLER, THE MARTIAN, & the new STAR WARS movie. Butler was perfect, but sound effects sometimes drowned out the description in the other two. Still, I did follow most of the action, and was satisfied with the results. I have since been told you can change the volume on the headphones, which would be great. Ed Meskys.
