[nfb-talk] Trumpcare

My concern is that the bill has gotten worse. Senate majority leader
Mitch McConnell has changed the bill to appeal to the more conservative
members of his party instead of the more moderate ones, like Susan
Collins. This a point I made earlier... How much would they have to
reduce those cuts in order to get it to pass? The estimates range from
$1 trillion to $800 billion now. If they cut that to $800 billion would
it be okay? $700 billion? Heck, say they cut it in half to $500 billion,
are we okay with it now? I'm not.

I keep hearing this "dead on arrival" thing but first of all, there are
479 days left until the mid-term elections in 2018. If Dems take over
the House of Representatives in 2018,they'll pass a repeal of the repeal
and then the Senate version would never get through a conference
committee. But we're not out of the woods until then. Secondly, I doubt
the bill as as little chance as some people make it out to be. I don't
think McConnell would be putting it out there if he didn't hink it had a
chance and I think it is possible it will pass with only a few more
minor modifications, mostly toward making the bill worse from our point
of view. Well, from the point of view of the disabled community.

PS: It occurs to me that pointing out that there are 479 days left
before the mid-terms is a lot like calling this a "marathon". But I
think an important distinction needs to be made. This is more like a
series of crisises than a marathon. Slow but steady doesn't win this
race. It's more like a 16 round prize fight where you can get knocked
out in any round.

I think we should work with someone like Susan Collins, who does care about people with disabilities. It is a reality that the Republicans have a majority. So, let us work with the more moderate Republicans.

What kind of people could look at a bill that takes health care away from 20+ million people and decide that their main problem with it is that it requires insurance companies to accept people with pre-existing conditions?

Various versions of the Republican health care bills have taken coverage away from 20 million to 24 million people. With their darwinistic view of the world, they think that's a good thing. The issue here really is whether we as a country are better off making sure people get health care or not. But you can't make this a stronger nation by taking health care away from 20+ million people.
